Trinity Women's Hoops Set Sights On Oglethorpe and Berry

Tiger Women's Basketball is back at home for more Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action.

The Tigers (5-7, 1-0 SAA) picked up a commanding 91-66 win against Southwestern. Livy Sauvageau (Houston, Texas / Second Baptist) led all scorers with 20 points on a scorching hot 7-10 shooting and an impressive 6-6 shooting beyond the arc. Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) added in 14 points and an impressive seven assists. Natalie Greenwood (Dallas, Texas / Byron Nelson) put in 13 points and was solid on the board with eight rebounds. As a team, the Tigers shot 57 percent from the field and 55 percent from three.

Preview - In the Calgaarden

The Tigers will take on Oglethorpe on Friday, January 9th at 6:00 PM and then battle Berry on Sunday, January 11th with tip-off set for noon.

On the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels: The Stormy Petrels enter the matchup with an impressive 9-3 overall record (1-0 SAA). Their three losses this season have come against LaGrange and nationally ranked opponents Emory and Hope. The setbacks were competitive, including a three-point loss to LaGrange and an eight-point defeat against Emory.

Oglethorpe is currently riding a three-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 222-173 during that stretch. Senior forward Keimarya Rivera has been one of the SAA's top frontcourt players, averaging 17.2 points per game while shooting an efficient 54 percent from the field. Rivera does most of her damage inside the arc, attempting just six three-pointers all season, and also pulls down 8.3 rebounds per contest.

As a team, the Stormy Petrels shoot 28 percent from three-point range. If the Tigers can control the paint and force Oglethorpe to rely on perimeter shooting, they'll have an opportunity to keep the Stormy Petrels' scoring in check.

The last meeting between the two programs came during the 2011–12 season, when Trinity defeated Oglethorpe 77-51. Historically, the Tigers hold a dominant 32-6 advantage in the all-time series.

On the Berry Vikings: The Vikings enter the matchup with an even 6-6 overall record. Berry opened the season 2-0 before dropping three straight games, then rebounded by winning four of its next five contests — a stretch highlighted by a 107-33 victory over Agnes Scott College. Most recently, the Vikings have suffered back-to-back losses to Ohio Wesleyan and John Carroll, both of which are ranked in the NCAA Division III top 20.

Offensively, Berry features two double-digit scorers in Elly Callihan and Briaiah Lewis. Callihan, a versatile forward, is capable from beyond the arc, shooting 32 percent from three-point range. As a team, however, the Vikings have struggled from deep (27 percent) and at the free-throw line (62 percent).

Defensively, Berry has been aggressive and disruptive, forcing an average of 22 turnovers per game and recording 122 steals this season.

This matchup will mark the first-ever meeting between Trinity and Berry in women's basketball.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers will hit the road to battle Rhodes and Millsaps on January 16th and 18th.
