DANVILLE, Ky. – The 25th-ranked Trinity Tiger men's swimming & diving team made their Colonel Classic debut this evening, coming in first place after the preliminary session of the with a score of 339.5, with Milligan University in second with a score of 306.5. This first session consisted of events ordinarily swam on the first day of the conference championship.
Day 1 Recap
Trinity began the meet with a stellar 200 free relay that earned second place to Milligan.
Daniel Apostol (Billings, Mont. / Central Catholic),
Nathan Perez (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek),
Jack Hester (Round Rock, Texas / Cedar Ridge), and
Trace Briones (San Antonio, Texas / Health Careers) fought hard, with Apostol's lead-off time being only a tenth off his lifetime best.
Theodore Ho (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) followed this relay with an incredible 500 free performance, touching only four seconds off his best ever time and edging out his competitor for the win.
John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin) yet again proved his medley prowess with a third-place finish in the 200 IM and his best dual meet time of the season, 1:55.03. The 50 free consisted of four top 8 finishes by Apostol, Perez,
Chase Hays (Austin, Texas / Anderson), and Briones, who won the event with a time of 21.32.
The Tiger divers also competed well during this session, with
Max Rolla-Mullis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) earning fifth place, and
Ash Meckel (Austin, Texas / The Griffin School) coming in ninth. The team enjoyed getting to watch them show off their skills as the meet progressed.
The session ended with another second-place relay in the 400 medley, consisting of Hester, Apostol,
William Walker (Houston, Texas / Westside), and Hays. The group swam a time of 3:25.04, only five seconds off the team's best time in a championship meet this season.
Looking Forward
Tomorrow, the Colonel Classic continues with the conference day 2 events in the morning, and the day 3 events in the evening. The Tigers will be looking for another dominant day to close out the weekend.
