DANVILLE, Ky. - The Trinity Women's Soccer team (9-0-1) battled through a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon in Kentucky to earn a 2-2 draw against Centre College (7-2-5) at Centre's field.
Lila Brackin's first-time finish in the 89th minute rescued a point for the Tigers after the Colonels had taken a second-half lead.
Trinity struck first in the 21st minute from the penalty spot.
Madisyn Barganski (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) drew a free kick, and the set piece was handed inside the box by a Centre defender.
Malea Cesar (Portland, Ore. / Sunset) stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way, rolling her shot right down the middle. The Centre keeper got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Colonels answered less than four minutes later with a header at the back post in the 25th minute to level the match. The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
The second half was played end to end, with both sides creating chances in the wet conditions. In the 75th minute, Centre broke through on a breakaway and one-touched a chip over
Colette Whitsitt (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) to take a 2-1 lead. The Colonels nearly doubled their lead on another breakaway in the 81st minute, but the shot went wide right.
The Tigers refused to let up. Barganski,
Alex Doran (Boerne, Texas / Geneva School of Boerne), Brackin, and
Talia Camin (Houston, Texas / Memorial) all came back on and became Trinity's driving force in attack. With less than a minute remaining, a Trinity free kick bounced around the box before
Kylie Harris (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) collected it at the top of the area and found Doran with a brilliant pass. Doran curled an effort on goal that forced the Centre keeper into a diving save. The rebound fell to
Lila Brackin (Dallas, Texas / Lake Highlands), who hit it first time into the bottom left corner to level the match at 2-2.
Centre had one last chance on a free kick with seconds remaining but couldn't turn it into anything dangerous, and the final whistle sounded on a 2-2 draw.
Trinity held the edge in total shots, 15-9, and shots on goal, 6-4. Centre led in corner kicks, 5-2. The Colonels' keeper made four saves, while Whitsitt made two stops in 90 minutes for the Tigers.
