San Antonio, TEXAS – The Trinity women's basketball team (12-8, 8-1 SAA) hosts Rhodes College (6-13, 2-6 SAA) and Millsaps College (13-6, 4-4 SAA) this weekend, looking to extend their two-game winning streak and stay atop the SAA table.
Last Time Out
The Tigers avenged their lone conference loss to Centre College last Sunday, taking a 64-53 win over the Colonels. Trinity was elite on the defensive end, forcing Centre to shoot just 29% from the field and 15% from three. They grabbed 11 steals, forcing 15 total turnovers. Livy Sauvageau led the charge with 19 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals on 62% (8-13) shooting from the field and 60% (3-5) from three.
Preview - Rhodes and Millsaps
On the Rhodes Lynx: The Lynx have lost five of their last six games, finding themselves near the bottom of the SAA standings. They've struggled mightily from the field, shooting 37% overall and just 27% from deep, and have been marred by turnover troubles, giving the ball up 17.2 times per game. In their last outing, a 54-57 OT loss to Berry College, they shot 30% from the field and 22% from three, and turned the ball over 20 times.
Rhodes is led by senior guard Avery Marsh, who averages 14.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game on 39% shooting. Marsh has had trouble holding onto the ball all year long, however, averaging 4.6 turnovers per game, tallying up 9 turnovers against Trinity earlier this season. Junior guard AC Milam is averaging 11.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game on 33% shooting.
On the Millsaps Majors: Millsaps has been a victim of three conference losses by four or more points, but all four of their conference wins have been by double-digits. The main difference between those wins and losses was the turnover battle, where the Majors found themselves down big in all of their losses. They've struggled shooting the ball somewhat, making 40% of their field goals and 32% of their threes. Millsaps is, however, one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, boasting an average turnover margin of 9.5 boards per game.
Senior center Elyse Warren is the driving force behind that rebounding success, averaging a double-double of 14.7 points and 17.7 rebounds per game. She ranks third in the nation in rebounding per game and hasn't grabbed fewer than 10 rebounds in any game this season, including a 33-rebound performance against Rhodes. Junior guard Garin Freeman leads the team in points per game with 15.9 points, adding 4.5 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.4 steals to her average. Junior forward Tia Anderson is averaging 15.8 points and 7.9 rebounds on 46% shooting.
Looking Ahead
The Tigers will head back on the road to take on Oglethorpe University (12-7, 4-4 SAA) and Berry College (11-8, 5-3 SAA) on Feb. 13 and 15.
