San Antonio, TX - The 12th-ranked Trinity University women's tennis team delivered another strong performance at home on Thursday morning, defeating 21st-ranked Swarthmore College 5-2 at the
Butch Newman Tennis Center.
Trinity set the tone early in doubles play, with the first match finishing on court #2.
Katie Schmidt (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) and
Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) delivered a strong performance to defeat Rao and Strickler 6-2, giving the Tigers an early edge in the doubles race. Swarthmore answered in the next match off the court at #3, where
Eva Kovachev (Arlington, Texas / The Oakridge School) and
Allison Vo (Houston, Texas / Memorial) battled throughout the set but were edged 6-4 by Almeda and Shiffer to even the score. The deciding match came down to the top court, where the 8th-ranked duo of
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) dropped a tight 6-4 decision, giving Swarthmore the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Trinity quickly flipped the momentum once singles began. The first match off the court came at #1, where 48th-ranked Kovachev delivered a composed 6-3, 6-3 win over Diaz to level the match at 1-1. The Tigers continued to build from there, as Tin controlled play at #3 and secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Messier to put Trinity ahead 2-1.
Freshman
Astrid Kerrman (Edina, Minn. / Edina) added another point at #6 with a steady 6-4, 6-2 win against Kideckel, extending the Tiger lead to 3-1. Trinity clinched the match at #4, as the undefeated Levy produced a dominant opening set and closed out a 6-0, 6-4 win over Shiffer to claim her seventh straight singles win of the season.
The Tigers added to the Phoenix's woes at #2, as the 28th-ranked Andrade battled through a competitive first set before pulling away for a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Li, putting the Tigers 5-1 up. The final match of the day finished at #5, where Swarthmore's Strickler earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Schmidt to close out the 5-2 final score.
After dropping the doubles point early, the Tigers showed impressive depth across the singles lineup, capturing five of six matches to secure the victory over another nationally ranked opponent.
