Scannell Wins 900th Career Game as Trinity Defeats Sewanee

SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity University baseball team rallied from an early deficit to take an 11-6 win over Sewanee (TN) on Sunday afternoon, which not only clinched the weekend series between the teams, but was also the 900th win in the career of Head Coach Tim Scannell.

Coach Scannell took over the head coaching position at Trinity in 1999, following two years as an assistant coach with the Tigers. He has led Trinity to the NCAA Division III College World Series four times in his career (2015, 2016, 2022, 2025), winning the 2016 National Championship. Coach Scannell was named the Division III National Coach of the Year by four different organizations after leading the Tigers to a school-record 44 wins (44-7 record) and the school's fifth overall Division III Championship. He is the 32nd coach in Division III history to reach 900 or more wins and is just the 14th of those to do so with just one school.

The TU Tigers (21-12, 12-3 SAA) split yesterday's doubleheader against Sewanee (17-15-1, 7-8 SAA), then won the series with today's victory. Trinity fell behind 5-0 early in the game but scored 11 of the final 12 runs in the game, beginning with a five-run second inning that evened the score at the time. Trinity took its first lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then added on two more in the fifth and two more in the eighth to pull away.

Joey Hagan (San Clemente, Calif. / Santa Margarita Catholic) picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-0, allowing just one hit over 4.2 shutout innings. Kyle Hoggatt (San Antonio, Texas / Reagan) came in to notch his first save of the year, relieving Hagan in the eighth after a pair of walks. Hoggatt struck out three in the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow a baserunner.

Evan Kuhl (Boerne, Texas / Champion) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Grant Anderson (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) and Sawyer Haynes (Waco, Texas / Midway) also had two hits each. Anthony Suscha (Indianapolis, Ind. / Brebeuf Jesuit) was 1-for-3 with three runs scored, driving in another and drawing two walks. Mattias Rytting (Houston, Texas / Bellaire) also scored twice, and Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) matched Suscha with two walks in the game. Anderson and Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) had two RBI each to lead the Tigers.

The Rundown
Sewanee got started quickly with a leadoff double in the first, which led to the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Trinity cut down another potential run with a nice defensive play as Anderson threw to Rytting at home to keep it a 1-0 game, eventually stranding two runners on base. Woodward walked to lead off the bottom of the inning and made it to third with just one out, but the Tigers were unable to level the score. The visitors then staged a two-out rally in the top of the second, which eventually chased Trinity starter Will Taylor (Greenwood Village, Colo. / Cherry Creek) from the game. Sewanee wound up with four more runs on three hits, three walks, and a hit batter, but also left the bases loaded.

Facing a 5-0 deficit, Trinity's offense came to life in the bottom of the second. Haynes started with a leadoff walk, followed by a walk to Rytting. A wild pitch followed a double steal, and Trinity was on the board. The next two batters struck out, though, and Sewanee nearly escaped with just one run allowed. Kuhl was hit by a pitch and then stole second, then Woodward was also hit to load the bases. Suscha drew four-pitch walk to bring in another run, then Baker slashed a single through the left side to make it 5-4. Anderson then tied the game with a single to shallow right. Sewanee went back in front quickly in the top of the third, though drawing three straight walks with two outs and then scoring on a balk. Hagen came in to get the final out of the inning after that, and it wound up being the last run scored by Sewanee. John Ramsey (Austin, Texas / Westwood) doubled with two outs in the bottom of the inning, then came home on a single by Khalfani Coney (Los Angeles, Calif. / Crossroads School) to make it 6-6 after three innings.

Hagen faced the minimum over the next four innings, erasing a walk with a double play in the fifth, and the only hit Sewanee got against him was thrown out stealing in the sixth. Trinity's offense continued scoring, giving Hagen the lead in the fourth. Suscha led off the inning with a walk and eventually scored on a sac fly by Anderson to make it 7-6. Rytting was plunked to start the fifth inning and Kuhl knocked him in with a two-out single to extend the lead. Kuhl moved to second on the throw to the plate and two wild pitches later scored to make it 9-6 after five innings. Sewanee drew two walks against Hagan with one out in the eighth, but Hoggatt struck out the next two batters to end the inning. The Trinity offense rewarded that effort with two more insurance runs in the bottom half. Suscha walked to start the inning and Baker walked to put two runners on. Anderson set up for a sac bunt but wound up with a bunt single to load the bases, and Haynes was hit two pitches later to tally another run. Ramsey drove in the final run of the game on a fielder's choice that made it 11-6, beating out the throw to first on a potential double play that would have ended the inning. Hoggatt then got a strikeout and two routine ground balls to secure the win and his save.
