DANVILLE, Kentucky – Trinity University Baseball splits doubleheader with Centre College.
The Tigers (23-17, 14-7 SAA) dropped game one 13-12 but bounced back with a 14-8 win in game two.
Game One - Trinity 12, Centre 13
Trinity opened the game with two runs in the first inning. Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, California / Palos Verdes Peninsula) scored when Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) grounded out to shortstop, bringing in the first run of the game. Thomas Moss (Sugar Land, Texas / Kempner) then came home on Sawyer Haynes' (Waco, Texas / Midway) RBI single up the middle, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Centre answered with six runs in the bottom half to move in front 6-2.
The Tigers started chipping away in the fourth. Haynes scored when Mattias Rytting (Houston, Texas / Bellaire) reached on an error, and Rytting later came home on Evan Kuhl's (Boerne, Texas / Champion) sacrifice bunt to cut the deficit to 6-4. Trinity added another run in the fifth as Moss scored on Grant Anderson's (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) sacrifice fly to center, making it a 6-5 game.
After Centre added a run in the seventh to go up 7-5, Trinity responded with three runs in the eighth. Baker scored on a wild pitch, Anderson came home on Anthony Suscha's (Indianapolis, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit) RBI groundout, and Rytting scored on John Ramsey's (Austin, Texas / Westwood) RBI single to left field to put the Tigers back in front 8-7. Centre answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake a 10-8 lead.
Trinity surged back again in the ninth. Baker doubled to center to score Woodward, and Anderson followed with an RBI single to left that brought in Moss and tied the game at 10-10. Rytting then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Baker, giving Trinity an 11-10 lead, before Suscha singled up the middle to bring in Anderson and extend the advantage to 12-10. Centre rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off.
Game Two - Trinity 14, Centre 8
The Tigers struck first in the opening inning after Kaleb Woodward walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Thomas Moss was hit by a pitch, and Will Baker followed with an RBI single to right field that brought in Woodward for a 1-0 Trinity lead.
Trinity added three more runs in the second. Anthony Suscha walked and moved to third on a John Ramsey single before coming in when Woodward reached on an error, making it 2-0. Evan Kuhl was then hit by a pitch, Moss was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Baker delivered again with a two-run single to left field that scored Kuhl and Woodward to stretch the lead to 4-0.
The Tigers broke the game open with an eight-run third inning. Sawyer Haynes opened the frame with a single, stole second and later scored when Kuhl was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Woodward followed with an RBI single that brought in Suscha, and Moss doubled down the left-field line to score Ramsey and Kuhl for an 8-0 advantage. Grant Anderson then singled through the left side to bring in Woodward, Moss stole home to make it 10-0, Haynes added an RBI single that scored Anderson, and Suscha capped the inning with an RBI single to right that plated Haynes for a 12-0 Trinity lead.
Centre answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth, but Trinity responded in the top of the fourth when Moss reached on an error, stole second, and scored on Baker's RBI single to left center, pushing the Tigers ahead 13-6.
Trinity added its final run in the fifth as Haynes launched a solo home run to center field, giving the Tigers a 14-6 lead. Centre scored twice in the seventh, but Matthew Azordegan (Madison, Mississippi / St. Andrew's Episcopal) helped close things out with 2.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
