SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity University women's soccer team opened its home slate with a 2-1 comeback win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday night at Paul McGinlay Field.
The Tigers (2-0) trailed 1-0 at halftime before scoring twice in the second half to complete the comeback. The Cru (0-2-1) struck first in the 34th minute, but Trinity answered less than a minute after the break and then took the lead for good in the final 15 of the game. The Tigers outshot Mary-Hardin Baylor 16-8 for the match, including a 10-2 edge in the second half, and finished with seven shots on target compared to the Cru's four. Trinity also held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Maggie Hartnett (San Antonio, Texas / Alamo Heights) tied the game in the 46th minute, converting an assist from
Lila Brackin (Dallas, Texas / Lake Highlands) just after the second-half kickoff.
Kylie Harris (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) got so excited she took off her shoe midgame.
Anna Newland (Kirkwood Mo. / Kirkwood) then netted the game-winner in the 77th minute off a feed from
Madisyn Barganski (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff), sending the Tigers in front for the remainder of the match. Harris was brought to tears.
Trinity used two goalkeepers in the win, with
Colette Whitsitt (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) making two saves in the first half and
Trinity Jefferson (Spring, Texas / Klein Oak) adding one save after the break, with the two combining to hold the Cru to just one goal.
