Prato Matthews led the team to an 83-62 victory over Austin College
on Saturday night, tying a long-standing career record in the
process.
Prato Matthews scored 33 points and pulled
down 15 rebounds on Saturday night, tying the school record for
career rebounds. She tied Trinity Hall of Famer Terri Hailey
(1977-81) for the all-time record. Prato Matthews is already
the SCAC's leading rebounder, having broken that career record
earlier in the year.
Trinity (18-7, 11-4) led 43-26 at halftime,
and Prato Matthews already had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the
game. The Tigers shot nearly 56% from the field in the
opening period, holding Austin College to just 34.5% shooting
overall. Austin College did hit 6-14 (42.9%) from three-point
range, but Trinity outscored the visitors 10-0 at the foul line.
In the second half, Trinity cooled off a bit,
dipping below 50% shooting in the period, but the defense still
gave up less than 32% shooting to finish off the game.
The game stayed close in the early part of the
first half, but Trinity used a 14-0 run to push the lead to 16
points with six minutes remaining until halftime. Austin
College held a brief 15-14 lead six minutes into the game, but the
Tigers converted a three-point play on their next possession and
never trailed again.
In addition to the record-tying night from
Prato Matthews, Ali Marzella had a stellar showing for the
Tigers. She finished with 20 points on 7-9 shooting and
recorded seven steals. Marzella scored 40 points and grabbed
13 steals total over the weekend. She also became the second
player this season with 100 or more assists, marking the only time
in school history that two players have reached the century mark in
one year.
Danielle Hubenak, who leads the team with 119
assists this season, scored 10 points, while Abby Dietert chipped
in with nine points on 4-8 shooting. Lindsay Hovland
came off the bench to score five points and led the team with four
blocked shots.
Maegan Fitzgerald led Austin College with 21
points, while Katy Williams had eight points and a team-best 10
rebounds.
Trinity concludes the regular season as the SCAC West Division
champions, earning the West's top seed at next weekend's conference
tournament.
