Women's Basketball Edges Millsaps to Earn Weekend Sweep

Jackson, Miss. - The Trinity University Tigers women edged the Millsaps College Majors 62-58 Saturday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game at The Hangar Dome.

Trinity (9-4, 3-2 SCAC), which has won two of the last three games, is in third place in the SCAC West Division. The Tigers lost 57-51 to Hendrix College Friday, in a conference game at Conway, Ark. Millsaps remained winless at 0-14 and 0-5 SCAC. Trinity has won the last 17 games with Millsaps.

Tiger sophomore forward Abby Dietert of Cibolo, Texas (Steele), led the game with 19 points, hitting 8-12 from the field. Dietert also had five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Junior forward Megan D'Errico of Issaquah, Wash. (Skyline), contributed 10 points, on 3-5 shooting. D'Errico had five rebounds and one steal.

Sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell of Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), pulled in seven rebounds, while scoring seven points. Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio chalked up six assists, and scored eight points. Senior post Alexandra Blake of Belleville, Ill. (John Burroughs), had nine points and five rebounds.

The Majors led 32-31 at halftime, and held as much as nine-point advantage (29-20, 5:51). In the second half, Millsaps went up 50-43 (7:30), unril Trinity tied the game at 50-50 (5:07). Following the seventh tie of the game (56-56, 1:42), Dietert put the Tigers up 57-56 with a free throw. D'Errico and sophomore guard Ali Marzella of Katy, Texas (Taylor), combined to sink three free throws, as Trinity led giving 60-56 with 14 seconds left. Millsaps Kristin Dobard hit a jumper with seven seconds on the clock. Marzella. who was fouled, hit two free throws as the game ended. Marzella accounted for four points, three rebounds, and two steals.

Shante Morton of Millsaps registered a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kristin Salmon also scored 14 points.

Trinity shot 38 percent from the field, as did Millsaps. The Tigers led 44-30 in rebounding, and grabbed 20 offensive boards, to 12 for the Majors.

The Tigers and Majors will play again Feb. 7 in Sams Gym, Trinity's last regular-season home game.

Trinity will host defending SCAC champion Oglethorpe at 6 p.m. next Friday.
