Box Score 2 San Antonio - The final SCAC meeting between
Trinity and DePauw came down to the wire, and DePauw earned its
first-ever win in San Antonio 32-31 on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (3-4, 1-3 SCAC) scored on a 67-yard interception return
by Ben
Robinson with 1:19 remaining in the game, seemingly ending
DePauw's undefeated season. DePauw (7-0, 5-0 SCAC) answered
right back with a score of its own, though, and then made a
surprise move with just 20 seconds left on the clock.
DePauw decided to go for two instead of tying the game with the
extra point, and after a Trinity timeout, the visitors were able to
escape with the win on a pass from Michael Engle to Nathan
Evans.
DePauw opened the scoring late in the first quarter, but
Trinity needed just one play to tie the game, as Nykolas
McKissic hit Caleb Urban
for a 64-yard touchdown with 1:48 left in the first.
McKissic finished 14-22 with 228 yards and three touchdowns in
the game, hitting Urban twice, and connecting with tight end Markham
Stayton as well.
"We came out strong and took some shots downfield," said
McKissic after the game. "That really got things going for us
early."
After Trinity's long touchdown, Engle and standout receiver Alex
Koors hooked up for the first of three Koors touchdowns on the
day. Koors caught 10 passes for 170 yards, while Engle
finished 28-41 for 369 yards and four touchdowns in the game.
Trinity bounced back again with a 22-yard TD pass from McKissic
to Stayton, then booted the kickoff high into the air and a strong
wind. Trinity recovered the kick before DePauw could even get
a hand on it, and Trinity's offense was in business again.
McKissic hit Urban for the second time just three plays later to
make it 21-14 at the half.
Garrett
Biel connected for a 33-yard field goal for Trinity in the
middle of the third quarter to push the lead to 10 points, but then
DePauw began its comeback. Engle hit Koors for a 30-yard
score late in the third, then a field goal from Eric Malm early in
the fourth tied the game..
Neither team managed much after that until the end when
DePauw began a drive with just over two minutes remaining.
DePauw drove to the Trinity 38 and looked to be setting itself up
for a game-winning field goal. Robinson stepped in front of
Engle's short pass at the 33 yard line, though, and he was off to
the races.
On the ensuing DePauw drive, Engle looked unaffected by the
interception, picking up two quick first downs and stopping the
clock with 26 seconds left at Trinity's 34. Koors caught his
third TD of the game on the next play to set up the gutsy call on
the PAT.
Urban finished with five receptions for 119 yards receiving, as
well as picking up 132 yards on four kickoff returns, and 31 yards
rushing. His total of 282 all-purpose yards is the most he's
had this season.
DePauw totaled 474 yards on offense, while Trinity had 271 yards
of total offense. Both teams picked up most of their yards
through the air, and Trinity was held to just 43 yards rushing in
the game. DePauw also recorded eight sacks on defense.
Trinity's defense forced three turnovers in the game, picking
off Engle twice and forcing a fumble. The other two turnovers
- aside from Robinson's score - came in the red zone, ending
potential scoring drives by DePauw.
Robinson finished with 11 tackles in the game, while Jarrod
Burns led the team with 14 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Trinity heads back on the road next week, facing off against
Huntingdon College. The Tigers do not return home until
November 13, taking on Austin College in the regular season
finale.
