San Antonio – The Trinity University
Tigers women's tennis team concluded its regular season home
schedule with a 6-3 victory Saturday over the St. Mary's
University Rattlers.
Trinity, ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III, upped its record
to 9-11, and finished the home campaign with a 4-3 mark. The Tigers
have won three consecutive matches, and six of the last seven. The
Rattlers are members of Division II.
The Tigers began the dual match by sweeping the doubles matches.
Katy Poettcker and Kassie Seger won No. 1 doubles, beating Cimen
Soy and Mei-Jing Ang 8-4. Katie Budinsky and Megan Jackson took No.
2 doubles 9-7 over Vanessa Sholles and Kelly Cooper. Thavindra
Ekanayake and Katie Griffith blanked Ashley Hernandez and Rachel
Gutierrez 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Trinity and St. Mary's split the singles matches 3-3. But,
Griffith clinched the dual match by winning No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2
over Sholles.
Seger beat Hernandez 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Arianna Rose
had an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles over Gutierrez.
St. Mary's won Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles. Soy beat Poettcker
6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Cooper defeated Budinsky 6-3, 6-4 at
No. 3. Ang and Jackson played a tight No. 4 singles match, with the
Rattlers player coming out on top 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 13-11 (tiebreak
instead of a third set).
Trinity takes on the nearby University of the Incarnate Word at
10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at UIW's courts. The Cardinals
are ranked 23rd in Division II. The Tigers, who have a record of
8-4 against Division III opponents, will compete in the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament April 23-25 at North
Little Rock, Ark. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA
playoffs.
