San Antonio – The Trinity University
Tigers will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the NCAA Division III
Men's Tennis Championship quarterfinals Tuesday, May 25, at
Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
Trinity (18-9), ranked 13th nationally, meets third-ranked
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (21-4) at 2 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Central).
C-M-S was a 9-0 winner over the Tigers March 11 at Claremont,
Calif.
The Tigers are led by first-year head coach Russell McMindes, a
former Trinity standout.
Also playing at 2 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday are second-ranked
Emory (16-7) and No. 5 Amherst (25-10). Last year, Amherst advanced
to the team final, and Emory took third place.
Scheduled for 10 a.m. starting times are No. 1 Middlebury (20-2)
and 11th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan (18-1), along with
seventh-ranked Washington-St. Louis (19-4) and No. 8 Carnegie
Mellon (21-5). Washington was a 2009 semifinalist, and won the
title in 2008.
The semifinals are slated for Wednesday, May 26, and the
championship and third-place matches Thursday, May 27.
Trinity, which has won 14 consecutive matches, earned a place in
the Elite Eight with a 5-2 victory over Kenyon last week in the
Whitewater Regional, at Whitewater, Wis. Prior to the regional, the
Tigers captured the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championship.
The Tigers are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA
quarterfinals since 1993, with their last trip in 2007.
Trinity is competing in its 17th NCAA postseason tournament. Former
coach Butch Newman, now Trinity's Director of Tennis, led the
Tigers to 16 straight NCAA berths. He also guided the Tiger men and
women to the 2000 NCAA Team Championships. Coach McMindes was a key
member of the national championship men's team.
Following the team tournament, three Tiger players will compete
in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, also at Oberlin,
from May 28-30. Max Frey, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla. (Holland
Hall), has a slot in the 32-draw singles tournament. Juniors Cory
Kowal, from Austin, Texas (Anderson); and Bobby Cocanougher, from
Southlake, Texas (Carroll), are in the 16-draw doubles event.
The Tiger women will be represented at the NCAA Singles
Championship by sophomore Katie Griffith of Spokane, Wash.
(Ferris). Griffith will compete in the 32-draw singles tournament
May 28-30 at the University of Mary Washington at Fredericksburg,
Va.
Trinity's women's team is led by second-year head
coach Ryan Takao, a former Tiger men's player. Coach Takao
was an assistant during the 2000 women's national
championship run.
