player Mackenzie Knoop (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy)
finished sixth in women's singles Saturday at the
USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College
Championships.
Washington & Lee's Sonja Meighan beat Knoop 6-4, 7-5 in the
fifth-place match at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
Knoop, the ITA Southwest Regional champion, won her play-in
match at the national event, and then lost to third-seeded Kendra
Higgins of the University of Chicago in the quarterfinals. A
victory by Knoop over Kalla Schaefer of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the
consolation semifinals placed her in the bid for fifth place. Knoop
and first-year player Stephanie Williamson (Katy, Texas/Taylor) had
qualified for the ITA Nationals doubles tournament.
The Trinity Tigers men's doubles team of senior Max Frey (Tulsa,
Okla./Holland Hall) and junior Erick DelaFuente (El Paso,
texas/Coronado) had taken home fifth place Friday with a win over
Andrew and Ben Guzick of Vassar. Frey also competed in the singles
tournament.
