San Antonio – The University of the
Incarnate Word Cardinals shut out the Trinity University Tigers
women 9-0 Saturday in an inter-divisional match at UIW's
Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.
Trinity, ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III, now stands at 7-8.
UIW, No. 43 in Division II, snapped the Tigers five-match winning
streak.
The tightest match of the day was at No. 1 singles, as Incarnate
Word's Adrianna Hernandez fought off match point to beat
Trinity's Thavindra Ekanayake 6-7, 6-0, 12-10 (tiebreak
instead of a third set). Alex Adams beat Trinity's Kylie
Hornbeck in three sets at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Brianda Navarro was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Katie Griffith at No. 2
singles; and Casey Bulls beat Megan Jackson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3
singles. The No. 5 singles match went to Maggae Doney who beat
Lavinia Bendandi 6-3, 7-5; and Francesca Bassoo defeated Kassie
Seger 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Hernandez and Doney blanked Ekanayake and Hornbeck 8-0 at No. 1
doubles; while Bulls and Adams beat Griffith and Jackson 8-5 at No.
3 doubles. Navarro and Lorena Rebolledo defeated Seger and Kathleen
Lundquist 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
The Tigers will compete April 22-24 at the SCAC Championship
Tournament at North Little Rock, Ark.
