North Little Rock, Ark. – The Trinity Tigers women won
third place with a 6-3 victory Sunday over the Centre Colonels at
the SCAC Women's Tennis Championship at Burns Park Tennis
Center.
The third-seeded Tigers (9-9) await a possible at-large bid to the
NCAA Division III Regionals May 13-15. Trinity, seeded No. 3 in the
SCAC Tournament, was edged 5-4 by No. 2 Sewanee in Saturday's
semifinals. The Tigers took third place last year with an 8-1
victory over Rhodes.
Trinity, ranked 25th nationally, won two of three doubles matches
from the fourth-seeded Colonels. Katie Griffith and Megan Jackson
won No. 2 doubles, beating Katy Bender and Lauren Dever 8-6. Erin
Jamison and Kassie Seger were 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles over
Elise Decamp and Sarah Swauger. Centre's Karolyn Hays and
Kathryn Hays won No. 1 doubles 8-3 over Thavindra Ekanayake and
Kylie Hornbeck.
The Tigers went on to win four of six singles matches, including
Ekanayake's 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Kathryn Hays at No. 1
singles. Hornbeck outfought Dever 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles;
Jamison beat Decamp 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 match; and Lavinia
Bendandi took No. 6 singles 6-3, 7-5 over Swauger.
Centre's singles wins came at the No. 2 slot as Karolyn Hays
beat Griffith 7-5, 6-1; and at the No. 3 match as Bender won two
tiebreaks from Jackson 7-6, 7-6.
