Claremont, California - Trinity's women's
tennis team had its seven-match win streak snapped with a 5-4 loss
to Washington (MO) University on Sunday afternoon.
Prior to today's loss, the Tigers had won all three matches on
their West Coast road trip. Trinity defeated Vassar (6-3),
Redlands (7-2), and Pomona-Pitzer (7-2) the last three
days.
Trinity falls to 7-2 this season with the loss, and both of the
team's losses have been by a single point.
Mackenzie Knoop and Thavindra Ekanayake won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles
to start the day, but the Bears rallied for wins at No. 2 and
No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead.
Stephanie Williamson and Kassie Seger lost 7-9 at No. 3, while
Katie Griffith and Kylie Hornbeck were edged 8-9 at the No. 2
position.
The Tigers split the singles matches with the Bears, winning the
at the top two spots, as well as at No. 4 singles. Knoop was
the only Trinity player to score two points on the day, winning
6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Griffith pulled out a tough comeback win at No. 2, winning 6-3
and 11-9 in the final two sets - after losing 3-6 in the
opener. Hornbeck was a 6-3, 6-1 winner, improving to 8-1 in
singles this season.
Ekanayake lost her first singles match of the year, falling to
8-1 overall in a 2-6, 6-1, 1-6 loss at No. 3 singles. Lavinia
Bendandi (1-6, 3-6) and Williamson (2-6, 5-7) also fell at No. 5
and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Trinity wraps up its Spring Break trip with a match at Claremont
College tomorrow afternoon. The Tigers return home on March
27, taking on Willamette University.
