San Antonio - The 14th-ranked Tiger women's
tennis team earned a narrow 5-4 win over No. 20 Gustavus Adolphus
College on Tuesday afternoon.
Trinity improved its season record to 13-5 with the victory,
which was also the fifth straight win for the Tigers.
Gustavus fell to 9-4 this year.
Stephanie Williamson clinched the match for the Tigers, coming
from behind to win her three-set thriller 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6
singles, and putting Trinity up 5-3 at the time.
Gustavus opened the match by winning two of the three doubles
points to take an early 2-1 lead in the match. Katie Griffith
and Kylie Hornbeck scored a close 8-6 victory at No. 2 singles for
the only Trinity point in doubles.
Griffith and Hornbeck were also two of Trinity's four singles
winners, as the Tigers came back to score the overall win.
Griffith won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Hornbeck won 6-2, 6-4
at line four.
In addition to Williamson's clincher at line six, Thavindra
Ekanayake also won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (7-5,
6-4). Lavinia Bendandi (1-6, 1-6) lost her No. 5 singles
match, while Mackenzie Knoop lost the final match of the day 2-6,
6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Knoop and Ekanayake lost 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Williamson
and Kassie Seger suffered a narrow 8-6 loss at No. 3 doubles.
Trinity returns to action next weekend, hosting McMurry
University on Friday, April 13. The Tigers also host two more
teams at home the next day, facing off against non-Division III
opponents Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian.
