Box Score 2 San Antonio – Trinity's
women's tennis team will make its first NCAA Playoff
appearance in four years on Saturday, May 12, facing either
Pomona-Pitzer or UT-Tyler at 3:00 p.m. in the second
round.
The Tigers posted a record of 18-7 on the season, winning the
team's first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championship since 2006. Also in Trinity's section of
the bracket will be UC-Santa Cruz, Whitman, and
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Claremont is the host for the first
three rounds of play, and will face either UCSC or Whitman in round
two. The winner of the Trinity and Claremont matches will
play on Sunday, May 13.
The winner of each third round match will advance to the NCAA
Quarterfinals, which will be held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary,
North Carolina, on May 21. The Semifinals and Finals will
follow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following the team
tournament, the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be held
at Cary.
First-year Mackenzie Knoop is one of three All-SCAC players for
the Tigers this season, and Knoop was also the SCAC Player of the
Year. She won the ITA Regional Singles and Doubles
Championships this past fall, which will earn her All-America
honors at the end of the season. All-American Thavindra
Ekanayake – Knoop's doubles partner during the spring
season – and Kylie Hornbeck were also named All-SCAC.
Trinity is led by Head Coach Russell McMindes, who is in his
first season with the Tiger women's team. Coach
McMindes has been the men's head coach for the past three
seasons, but took over the women's program starting this
school year.
