Box Score San Antonio - The Tiger women's tennis team
enjoyed an outstanding opening day of the ITA Regional Singles and
Doubles Championships, with several players still in
contention.
Trinity has eight singles players and four doubles teams still
alive in the main draw of the competitions. The tournament
has just 16 total singles players left, while the doubles
competition has reached the quarterfinals after the opening day of
competition.
Trinity had three players seeded in the top six for the
singles tournament, and all three received first-round
byes. All three then proceeded to win in straight sets
in the second round.
Top seed Mackenzie Knoop won 6-1, 6-4 in her only match of the
day, and fourth-seeded Thavindra Ekanayake also won 6-1, 6-4.
Kylie Hornbeck, the #6 seed, won 6-2, 6-2 in her match.
Also advancing in the main singles draw for the Tigers were
Kathleen Lundquist, Stephanie Williamson, Caroline White, Gabrielle
Roe, and Kristy Hamilton. Lundquist will have to face her own
teammate (Knoop) for a shot in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
She won 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 over the #15 seed to advance.
Williamson won 6-3, 6-4 in her first match, then took a 6-3, 7-5
win over the ninth singles seed to advance. Hamilton also
beat a ranked opponent to move on in the main draw. She won
6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then upset the #11 seed 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, the top-ranked team of Knoop and Ekanayake advanced
to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory in the second round.
The Tiger duo received a first-round bye, as did #5 seeds Hornbeck
and Williamson. Hornbeck and Williamson also won 8-2 to move
on in the tournament.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were the teams of
White/Hamilton and Roe/Lundquist - both of which defeated ranked
opponents to do so. White/Hamilton won 8-2 in their opening
round match, then defeated the sixth seed 8-2 to advance.
Roe/Lundquist edged their first-round opposition 8-5, then pulled
off an 8-4 win over the tournament's eighth seeded team.
The tournament continues tomorrow morning, with singles and
doubles action playing out throughout the day. The
championships for both the singles and doubles tournaments will be
on Sunday.
