Trinity Women's Tennis Shines in Opening Day of ITA Regional

Box Score

San Antonio - The Tiger women's tennis team enjoyed an outstanding opening day of the ITA Regional Singles and Doubles Championships, with several players still in contention.

Trinity has eight singles players and four doubles teams still alive in the main draw of the competitions.  The tournament has just 16 total singles players left, while the doubles competition has reached the quarterfinals after the opening day of competition.

Trinity had three players seeded in the top six for the singles tournament, and all three received first-round byes.  All three then proceeded to win in straight sets in the second round.

Top seed Mackenzie Knoop won 6-1, 6-4 in her only match of the day, and fourth-seeded Thavindra Ekanayake also won 6-1, 6-4.  Kylie Hornbeck, the #6 seed, won 6-2, 6-2 in her match.

Also advancing in the main singles draw for the Tigers were Kathleen Lundquist, Stephanie Williamson, Caroline White, Gabrielle Roe, and Kristy Hamilton.  Lundquist will have to face her own teammate (Knoop) for a shot in the quarterfinals tomorrow.  She won 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 over the #15 seed to advance.

Williamson won 6-3, 6-4 in her first match, then took a 6-3, 7-5 win over the ninth singles seed to advance.  Hamilton also beat a ranked opponent to move on in the main draw.  She won 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then upset the #11 seed 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, the top-ranked team of Knoop and Ekanayake advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory in the second round.  The Tiger duo received a first-round bye, as did #5 seeds Hornbeck and Williamson.  Hornbeck and Williamson also won 8-2 to move on in the tournament.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were the teams of White/Hamilton and Roe/Lundquist - both of which defeated ranked opponents to do so.  White/Hamilton won 8-2 in their opening round match, then defeated the sixth seed 8-2 to advance.  Roe/Lundquist edged their first-round opposition 8-5, then pulled off an 8-4 win over the tournament's eighth seeded team.

The tournament continues tomorrow morning, with singles and doubles action playing out throughout the day.  The championships for both the singles and doubles tournaments will be on Sunday.
