Box Score 2 San Antonio - The Tiger women's tennis has one
singles player and one doubles team remaining after day two of the
ITA Singles and Doubles Regional Tournament on Saturday.
Top seeds Mackenzie Knoop and Thavindra Ekanayake will play for
the doubles championship on Sunday, earning a pair of victories on
Saturday afternoon. The Tiger duo defeated Stofer/Hunt of
Southwestern 8-1, then reached the final with an 8-3 win over the
fourth-seeded team of Blacketer and Blundell from
UT-Tyler.
Knoop will also play in the singles semifinals on Sunday, as
four of the top five singles seeds advanced today. As the top
singles seed, Knoop faces fifth-seeded Sofia Vega of Texas
Lutheran. Vega beat Ekanayake - the #4 seed - 6-4, 6-2 to
reach the semifinal. Knoop won 6-0, 6-0 to reach the
quarterfinals, then ousted Jessica Blundell of UT-Tyler 6-1, 6-2 in
her second contest of the day.
Kylie Hornbeck was Trinity's only other player to reach the
quarterfinals, defeating Mary Alice Blacketer (UT-Tyler) 2-6, 7-5,
6-2. In the quarterfinal match, though, #6 seed Hornbeck was
beaten by #2 seed Brittni Fawsett of UMHB.
In other doubles action, unseeded Tiger teams of Caroline
White/Kristy Hamilton and Gabrielle Roe/Kathleen Lundquist also
lost in the quarterfinals. The #5 seed team of Hornbeck and
Stephanie Williamson also fell in the quarterfinals to #3 team of
Frisenhan/Cole of UT-Tyler.
Knoop won both the ITA singles and doubles regional titles last
season, teaming up with Williamson for the doubles crown.
