Abilene, Texas - Trinity's women's tennis
team split a pair of matches to open up the 2013 spring season,
defeating Hardin-Simmons University 9-0, but falling in a 7-2 match
against Oklahoma Christian University.
The Tigers started the season with a shutout win over HSU at the
Abilene Christian University Indoor Championships on Friday.
Trinity fell to Oklahoma Christian to close out the day, and
are now 1-1 on the season.
Kylie Hornbeck and Gabrielle Roe were Trinity's only singles
players to win both of their matches in today's action.
Playing at No. 6 singles, Roe won 6-0, 6-0 against
Hardin-Simmons, then took a 6-1, 6-3 win in the finale against OCU.
Hornbeck won 6-1, 6-0 in her opener, then battled for a
three-set victory (6-2, 1-6, 10-7) in the second match of the
day.
Hornbeck also played No. 2 doubles in both matches, winning 8-1
with teammate Caroline White against Hardin-Simmons, but falling
8-4 against Oklahoma Christian.
In the Oklahoma Christian match, Trinity lost all three doubles
points to fall behind 3-0 early. The Tigers then won two of
the singles points and nearly scored a third as White fell in a
three-set match (3-6, 6-4, 5-10) at the fourth position.
Kristy Hamilton and Stephanie Williamson took an 8-0 doubles win
against HSU, then Hamilton went on to score a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4
singles. Against Oklahoma, the doubles team lost a narrow 8-7
(7-4) decision that nearly scored Trinity's first point of the
match. Hamilton later lost 6-2, 6-2 in singles in that
match.
Mackenzie Knoop and Thavindra Ekanayake went 1-1 at No. 1
doubles for the Tigers. The duo won 8-4 in the opener, then
lost 8-2 against Oklahoma. The pair also went 1-1 in singles,
playing in Trinity's top two positions. Knoop won 6-1, 7-5
against Hardin-Simmons, then lost 6-3, 6-1. Ekanyake took a
6-2, 6-0 win in the first match, then fell 6-0, 6-4 to finish the
day.
Trinity will continue the ACU Indoors with a single match
tomorrow, taking on hosting Abilene Christian University at 9:00
a.m.
