Box Score 2 Tyler, Texas - Trinity's women's tennis
team had a singles player and two doubles teams reach the
semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest
Region Women's Championships.
Tiger player Caroline White, the tournament's No. 10 seed,
defeated Genene Haddad of Hardin-Simmons 7-5, 7-5 in
Saturday's quarterfinal round. She faces second-seeded Casey
Johnson of UT-Dallas, who was a 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 (tiebreak) upset
winner over No. 5 Kylie Hornbeck of Trinity.
Top seed Sofia Vega of Texas Lutheran beat seventh-seeded
Trinity player Liza Southwick 6-2, 6-2. No. 6 Jessica Blundell of
host UT-Tyler defeated 11th-seeded Gabrielle Roe of Trinity 6-0,
6-1 in the other quarterfinals matchups.
Both times of the semifinals and championship match will be
determined.
Two Tiger teams will compete in both doubles semifinals on
Sunday, with times to be announced. The fourth-seeded Trinity team
of Kristy Hamilton and Stephanie Williamson will take on the No. 1
duo of Johnson and Auvi Tran of UT-Dallas. No. 3 seeds Hornbeck and
Southwick meet the second-seeded duo of Blundell and Amy
Friesenhahn of UT-Tyler. The championship match will follow.
In Saturday's doubles quarterfinals, Hamilton and
Williamson took out UT-Tyler's Tori Musngi and Jennifer
Payne, the No. 5 seeds, 8-6. Hornbeck and Southwick were 8-3
winners over eighth seeds Nicole Musngi and Haley Albro, also of
UT-Tyler.
Earlier in the day, in the singles third round, White defeated
the fourth-seeded Friesenhahn 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the
quarterfinals. Roe had upset Tran, the No. 3 seed, by a score of
6-3, 6-3.
The singles and doubles winners advance to the USTA/ITA National
Small College Championships Oct. 10-13 at Fort Myers, Fla.
