San Antonio - The Tiger women's tennis
team split a pair of Saturday afternoon matches, defeating Texas
Lutheran University 7-2 after being edged 5-4 by the University of
Texas-Tyler earlier in the day.
Trinity is now 9-8 on the season after today's split, though the
team has won seven of its last 10 matches.
UT-Tyler took the opening point of Trinity's first match of the
day, though the Tigers did rally to take a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Kylie Hornbeck and Stephanie Williamson put Trinity in front
with a narrow 9-8 (7-5) win from line two.
After the Patriots tied the match with a win at No. 3 singles,
it was Hornbeck once again that put Trinity in front with her 6-1,
5-7, 6-0 win from the top line in singles. UT-Tyler took the
next two singles matches, though, pulling ahead 4-3, and needing
just one of the final two singles points to win the match.
Lavinia Bendandi held on for a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win at line four
singles to tie the match, but UT-Tyler was able to win the final
match on the court to take the win.
Despite the loss, Trinity rebounded nicely against Texas
Lutheran, taking each of the three doubles points to start the
finale. Kathleen Lundquist and Kristy Hamilton won 9-8 from
the top line, marking their second doubles victory of the day.
Michelle Gun-Munro and Caroline White quickly clinched the match
with their wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles, respectively, as
Trinity led 5-0 at that point. Texas Lutheran scored the next
two points, but the Tigers finished with wins from Elena Wilson and
Kaitlyn Thompson to end the day's action.
Trinity will conclude its regular season schedule by hosting the
University of Texas-Dallas and Colorado College next Saturday,
April 19.
