San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers women's tennis
team, ranked No. 28 in the NCAA Division III, beat the Division II
McMurry University War Hawks 5-1 Saturday at the Butch Newman
Tennis Center in a rain-delayed match.
Trinity (8-7) claimed the fifth and deciding
point at No. 6 singles as Stephanie Williamson won 6-1, 6-1. Three
other singles matches did not finish, by mutual agreement of the
coaches.
As far as completed matches, the Tigers led 2-1
after doubles. Williamson and Kylie Hornbeck won the No. 2 line
8-4, while Caroline White and Gabrielle Roe took No. 3
doubles 8-2. Kathleen Lundquist and Kristy Hamilton lost 4-8 in the
No. 1 match.
Hornbeck won No. 1 singles after her opponent
retired because of an injury. The Trinity senior was down 1-2 in
the first set at the time. Roe took care of No. 4 singles by a
score of 6-1, 6-0.
In the did not finish category, Hamilton was
down 2-6, 0-5 at No. 2 singles. White lost the first set of the No.
3 match 2-6, but held a 5-2 lead when the action was halted.
Lavinia Bendandi played No. 5 singles, and was leading 6-2,
4-0.
Trinity will host two matches on Saturday, April 12,
starting with a 10:00 a.m. matchup with the University of
Texas-Tyler. Texas Lutheran University visits campus at 3:00
p.m.
