Box Score 2 Fredericksburg, Virginia - The Trinity
women's tennis team fell 5-1 to the host University of Mary
Washington in the second round of the NCAA Division III
Championships on Friday.
Trinity completed its campaign with a 14-9 record. The Tigers
competed in their third consecutive NCAA tournament, and were led
by first-year Head Coach Matthew Haugen.
Mary Washington, ranked No. 21 nationally, won
two of the three doubles and three singles matches to advance to
Saturday's regional final.
The Tigers picked up their point in the dual
match at No. 2 doubles, as Kathleen Lundquist and Liza Southwick
prevailed 8-5. Kylie Hornbeck and Stephanie Williamson lost a
tightly played No. 1 doubles matchup 9-8 (4-7). Caroline White and
Gabrielle Roe wrapped up the season with an 8-1 record after being
edged 8-6 on the No. 3 line.
The Mary Washington singles victories came in
straight sets to clinch the overall team victory. Hornbeck finished
up at 10-10 after falling at No. 1 singles, while White completed
the season at 7-7 with her loss. Lavinia Bendandi posted a
10-4 record from the No. 6 position for the season.
Trinity opened the NCAA postseason event with a
5-2 win over Otterbein University on Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers earned an automatic bid to the NCAA
tournament by winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championship on April 27. The Tigers defeated Schreiner University
5-0 at the Butch Newman Tennis Center to capture their third
straight conference crown.
