Antonio - Five members of the Trinity Tigers
women's tennis team advanced to the third round of "A"
Singles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region
Championships on Friday.
The Butch Newman Tennis Center is serving as
headquarters of the tournament, which continues Saturday and
Sunday. Two rounds each of singles and doubles were completed on
Friday. There are also “B” Singles and Doubles, along
with consolation play.
Sophomore Liza Southwick, the event's No.
2 seed, defeated Laura Weinheimer of Hardin-Simmons University 6-1,
6-0 in Friday's second round. First-year player Marie Lutz,
seeded fifth, beat Jenna Smith of Hardin-Simmons 6-0, 6-1. No. 8
Blaire Porter, also a Tiger newcomer, bested Bree Brosig of McMurry
University 6-2, 6-1. Gabby Roe, a 12th-seeded junior, took out
Lizzie Ostroff of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 6-0, 6-1.
Unseeded junior Kristy Hamilton beat No. 15 Sarah Moses of the
University of Texas-Tyler 6-3, 6-3.
Southwick and Lutz, seeded No. 2 in
“A” Doubles, defeated Hannah Warren and Paola Nunez of
Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-1 in the second round. Porter and first-year
Cheyenne Duncan, the No. 5 seeds, were 8-6 winners over teammates
Caroline White, a junior, and first-year Nicole Rueb.
Saturday's action begins at 8:00 a.m. with
the round of 16 singles, and quarterfinals of doubles.
Sunday's “A” Singles and Doubles winners
advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships
October 9-12 at Sumter, South Carolina.
