Box Score 2 Abilene, Texas - The Tiger women's tennis
team opened up the 2015 spring season with a pair of victories on
Friday, defeating Prairie View A&M University 5-2 and
Hardin-Simmons University 9-0.
Trinity stands 2-0 on the season after the wins, the first of
which came at the Abilene Christian University Indoor Championships
against Division I Prairie View. The Tigers complete the
weekend tomorrow against Abilene Christian at 3:00 p.m. That
match may be moved up to an earlier time, weather pending.
In the opener against Prairie View, the Tigers
were down 0-1 after doubles (following Division I rules), as the
Panthers took two of three matches. Cheyenne Duncan and
Gabrielle Roe handily won the No. 3 match by a score of 6-1.
Liza Southwick and Marie Lutz were edged 7-6 (7-2) on the No.
1 line, while Kristy Hamilton and Blaire Porter also lost a
tiebreaker 7-3, at No. 2 doubles.
Trinity went on to win five of six singles
matches, with the clincher coming at No. 5, as Caroline White
defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-1. Lutz won No. 2 singles 7-6 (8-6),
7-5, Roe was a 6-3, 6-3 winner on the No. 3 line, Porter brought
home a three-set victory 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Nicole Rueb
took the No. 6 matchup 6-0, 6-1. Southwick fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1
singles.
Trinity did not drop a set in the match with the
Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls. In doubles, Lutz and Southwick took the
No. 1 match 8-3 to earn a split for the day. Porter and
Hamilton also earned a split after taking line two 8-2, while
Duncan and Roe won 8-1 at the third position for the second time
today.
The clincher against Hardin-Simmons came at No.
1 singles as Southwick won 6-2, 6-2. Lutz and Porter also
earned singles victories, while Roe made it a clean sweep for the
day. She won both of her singles and doubles matches on
Friday, finishing with a 7-5, 6-2 win against HSU. White and
Rueb helped finish off Trinity's first sweep of the young season at
the final two singles positions.
Trinity will not make its 2015 home debut until March
1 against Rollins College, at 12:00 p.m. The Tigers return to
San Antonio, though, next weekend, facing off against Division I
University of Incarnate Word. The two teams will tangle at
3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7.
