Box Score 2 Georgetown, Texas - Five Tiger women's players advanced to the third round of “A” Singles Friday on the opening day of the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships at Southwestern University.
Third-seeded Marie Lutz defeated Jabree McLaine of East Texas Baptist University 6-2, 6-0 in the second round of play. No. 6 Liza Southwick took out McMurry University's Bree Brosig 6-0, 6-0, and Tiger newcomer Andrea de Leon was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over No. 7 Tori Musngi of the University of Texas-Tyler. Gabrielle Roe, seeded 11th, beat UT-Tyler's Nicole Musngi 6-1, 6-4, and Cheyenne Duncan bested Sarah Moses, also of UT-Tyler, 6-2, 6-1.
In “A” Doubles, the top-seeded team of Southwick and Lutz advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-1 second-round win over Julia Lefler and Lauren Mahaney of Hendrix College. Southwick and Lutz are the defending Regional champions.
Saturday begins with the round of 16 singles, and the quarterfinals of doubles. There is also competition in “B” Singles and Doubles, and consolation rounds in both singles events. The “A” Singles and Doubles champions, who will earn the titles on Sunday, advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships October 15-18 at Sumter, South Carolina.
