Box Score Walla Walla, Washington - The 33rd-ranked Trinity women's tennis team concluded its trip to the Northwest with a 5-2 loss to the No. 18 University of Redlands, in a match played at Whitman College on Sunday.
Trinity went 2-2 on the trip against NCAA Division III opponents, beating No. 22 Whitman and No. 35 Linfield (OR) College. The Tigers were edged by 29th-ranked Lewis and Clark (OR) College earlier in the week. Overall, Trinity has a 2-3 record, which includes a loss to St. Mary's (TX) University of Division II.
"This weekend was a great start to our season," said Head Coach Gretchen Rush. "There were a lot of positives. We went 2-2 with four nationally-ranked teams. Captain Gabrielle Roe had three singles wins. Cheyenne Duncan and Caroline Kutach went three out of four in doubles. We are looking forward to more great competition next Saturday."
Redlands took a 2-1 lead after the doubles. Cheyenne Duncan and Caroline Kutach won No. 3 doubles 9-8 (7-5), coming back from an 0-3 deficit to win the tiebreaker. Liza Southwick and Marie Lutz lost the No. 1 match, and Gabrielle Roe and Blaire Porter came up short on the No. 2 line.
Trinity's singles victory was in the No. 4 match, as Roe won in straight sets. Lutz lost the No. 1 singles match, and Kutach, who was edged 7-5 in the first set, fell on the No. 2 line. Southwick won the first set of No. 3 singles, but lost 6-3 in the third stanza. Andrea De Leon and Duncan's Nos. 5 and 6 singles matchups, respectively, did not finish.
The Tigers will host two matches Saturday, starting at 9:00 a.m. with Tyler Junior College, ranked No. 2 in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Texas Lutheran University comes to campus for a 2:00 p.m. match.
