Trinity Women Split Saturday Home Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

San Antonio - The Tiger women's tennis team split Saturday's matches with Tyler Junior College and Texas Lutheran University at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.

Trinity (3-4), ranked 33rd in the NCAA Division III, lost 6-1 to Tyler Junior College, and bounced back to defeat fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference school Texas Lutheran 8-1. The Tigers are sporting a record of 3-2 against DIII teams. Tyler JC is ranked No. 2 in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

The Tiger victory against Tyler JC came at No. 2 doubles, as the tandem of Marie Lutz and Caroline Kutach won 8-4. Trinity's No. 3 team of Blaire Porter and Cheyenne Duncan battled hard at No.3  doubles, before coming up short by a score of 9-7.

The dual match was played to decision, as Tyler JC won the top three singles lines in straight sets. Kutach played No. 1 singles, Gabrielle Roe was on the No. 2 line, and Andrea De Leon competed in the No. 3 match.

"The match with TJC was very well contested," said Head Coach Gretchen Rush. "We had real even matches at two and three doubles. Caroline Kutach and Marie Lutz won No. 2 doubles, and played a great match. It was a new doubles team combination, so we are trying that out. That was successful. Blaire Porter and Cheyenne Duncan lost a tough 9-7 at No. 3. Cheyenne was on the verge of winning at No. 6 singles. She was definitely one of our star players today, with Marie and Caroline."

Later in the day, the Tigers started their match with the Bulldogs by taking all three doubles matches. Kutach and Lutz were the No. 1 team, Roe and Liza Southwick played No. 2 doubles, and Duncan and Porter competed at No. 3.

TLU's only win came at No. 1 singles as Sofia Vega, ranked 11th in the nation, beat the No. 46 Lutz in straight sets. Kutach, Roe, De Leon, Erin Tsai, and Duncan won the remaining singles matches.

"Trinity played awesome doubles to set the tone for a near sweep," said Coach Rush about the final match of the day. "Marie Lutz battled valiantly against nationally-ranked powerhuse Sofia Vega."

Up next for the Tigers will be two home matches Saturday, February 20, against two NCAA Division II teams, the University of Central Oklahoma and St. Edward's (TX) University. Central Oklahoma gets under way at 9:00 a.m., and St. Edward's starts at 2:00 p.m.
