Box Score San Antonio - The 24th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team won its sixth consecutive match with a 9-0 shutout victory over #37 Kalamazoo (MI) College on Tuesday.
The Tigers now stand at 9-5 overall, and are 9-2 against NCAA Division III opponents. Trinity also posted its fourth shutout win of the season.
"We were behind in the No. 1 doubles, almost the whole match," said Head Coach Gretchen Rush. "We were down 3-4, we were down 4-5, so, they did a great job and came back and won. Caroline Kutach, in No. 2 singles, and Cheyenne Duncan, at No. 6, were down the first set, and came back. It was a really hard day to play tennis. It was really windy, and they had a long day of school. The girls from Kalamazoo were on Spring Break, so I think they were a little fresher than we were. But I thought the girls did great. They didn't play their best, but they won nine matches, so that's impressive. They came through 100%. They finished incredibly well."
The top doubles team of Marie Lutz and Caroline Kutach came from behind to win their matchup 8-6. The Tiger tandem is now sporting an 8-1 record, as are Gabrielle Roe and Liza Southwick, the No. 2 doubles pair. Andrea De Leon and Cheyenne Duncan remained undefeated at 6-0 after their win on the No. 3 line.
Lutz took No. 1 singles, and improved to 9-4 on the season. Kutach was down in the first set of the No. 2 match, but rallied to win the opener 7-6 (1), and the second stanza 6-1. She upped her record to 8-5. Southwick now stands at 6-2 after winning No. 3 singles, and Roe is sporting a 10-4 mark following her fourth line win. De Leon improved to 9-4 with her decision at No. 5 singles. Duncan was down in her first set of the No. 6 match, but fought back and won 7-5, 6-4.
Trinity will next host #34 Wellesley (MA) College at 4:00 p.m.Wednesday.
