Box Score San Antonio - Trinity junior Liza Southwick has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
It was a busy time for the 24th-ranked Tigers, who took on nationally-ranked squads throughout the week. Trinity blanked #37 Kalamazoo (MI) College 9-0, and beat #37 Wellesley (MA) College 8-1 in home matches. Trinity then headed to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in Emory University's Fab Five Tournament. The Tigers were edged 5-4 by #10 Sewanee: The University of the South (TN), and were blanked 9-0 by #4 and host Emory. Trinity lost 5-0 to #1 Williams (MA) College, the defending NCAA Division III champions, and fell 8-1 to #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges to finish the week.
Southwick more than held her own against these top teams. During the week, Southwick went 3-2 in singles, and posted a 4-2 record in doubles. Southwick won singles matches against Kalamazoo, Wellesley, and Sewanee. Southwick was paired with Gabrielle Roe, as the Tiger tandem took No. 2 doubles against the aforementioned teams. In the final two matches, Southwick and Marie Lutz were reunited. They won Trinity's only point against Claremont, by taking No. 1 doubles. Southwick and Lutz defeated the Claremont doubles team which had advanced for the past two years to the NCAA Championship match.
This season, Southwick stands at 8-4 in singles play, and is 13-6 in doubles. Trinity is sporting an overall record of 10-9, and is 10-6 against the Division III competition.
The Tigers will head to Kingsville, Texas, Saturday to play Texas A&M University-Kingsville, a member of Division II. The match will be played at 11:00 a.m. at the Bishop High School Tennis Courts.
