Box Score Kerrville, Texas - After receiving a first-round bye, the top-seeded Trinity women's tennis team shut out the host and #5 seed Schreiner University 5-0 in Saturday's semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championship.
Trinity (13-9) will take on #2 seed Southwestern University at 8:00 a.m. Sunday in the title match. The Tigers have won the last four SCAC Championships. Trinity is ranked 24th in the nation, and is sporting a 12-6 record against NCAA Division III opponents. Schreiner dropped to 11-8 after the loss.
The Tigers doubles teams handily won all matches. Liza Southwick and Marie Lutz took the #1 match, and improved to 6-4 on the season. Cheyenne Duncan and Caroline Kutach were the #2 team, while Blaire Porter and Andrea De Leon won the third line.
Only two singles matches were completed, as the dual match was halted after decision. De Leon won 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles, and upped her record to 12-8. The clincher came at #3 singles, with Southwick doing the honors. She now stands at 10-5 this season.
The conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs, which begin May 13-15, at a site to be determined. The NCAA Team Championship is scheduled for May 23-25 at Kalamazoo, Michigan.
