Fourth Quarter Touchdown Leads Trinity Football Past Pacific Lutheran

San Antonio - The Trinity football team scored a touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in the game to defeat Pacific Lutheran University 9-3 on Saturday night.

GAME SUMMARY

Evan McDowell finished off a 12-play, 92-yard fourth quarter drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the final seconds of the game. McDowell had 65 rushing yards on the scoring drive, including a 28-yard run on 3rd-and-19 to keep the drive alive.

Colby Doyal kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter for the only score of the first half, and Pacific Lutheran tied the game with a 38-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Trinity's defense forced four turnovers in the game, including an interception on a desperation pass at the end of the contest.  The Tigers allowed just 115 yards of offense in the second half, and 47 of those came on one drive.

 

NOTABLES

The Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Lutes dropped to 1-1.

Evan McDowell rushed 25 times for 189 yards and a touchdown, which is by far a career-high for junior running back.  It also marks the most rushing yards for a Trinity player since Jeremy Simmons ran for 216 yards in 2014.

Christian Aleman had six punts for 259 yards (43.2 yards per kick), with the longest tallied at 51 yards.

Damiyon Harris led the game with 14 tackles (six solo). Luke Packard made 10 tackles (three solo), one sack, four QB hurries, and one tackle for a loss. This season, Packard leads the team with 37 tackles (17 solo), along with 4.5 sacks, 10 tackles for a loss, and six QB hurries.

Robert Kuhne, Brad Hood, and Robert Molina each intercepted the Pacific Lutheran quarterback, while Kievan Boudreaux-Bostic recovered a fumble.

The Tigers won for the second straight time against Pacific Lutheran, after also winning 23-13 last year.  The teams are now tied 2-2 in the all-time series.

The Tigers travel next Saturday to Orange, California, to take on Chapman University at 7:00 p.m. PDT.
