Three Trinity Women's Tennis Singles Players Advance to ITA Singles Semifinals; Doubles Team to Final

Abilene, Texas - Three Trinity women's singles players advanced to the semifinals Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships. A Tiger doubles team will compete for a third straight Regional title.

 

TOURNAMENT SUMMARIES

Top-seeded Liza Southwick advanced to the "A Singles" semifinals with two victories Saturday. Southwick first outfought 16th-seeded Lauren Kuhn of the University of Texas-Tyler 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the third round. The Tiger senior then defeated #8 Tiffany Stankiewicz of East Texas Baptist University 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Southwick's opponent on Sunday will be Trinity teammate Caroline Kutach, the tournament's fourth seed.

Kutach, a sophomore, beat 13th-seeded Ashleigh DeBauge, a Tiger newcomer, 6-2, 6-3 in round 3. She then defeated #9 Shayne Cook of Hardin-Simmons University 6-2, 6-2.

Second-seeded Marie Lutz was a 6-2, 6-2 third-round winner over #15 Sophie Farmer of the University of Texas-Dallas. Lutz then beat seventh-seeded Kate Bramlett of East Texas Baptist 6-4, 6-4. The Tiger junior takes on third-seeded Kathy Joseph of UT-Dallas in the semifinals.

All-Americans Southwick and Lutz will vie for a third consecutive Regional "A Doubles" Championship. The top-seeded Tiger tandem first shut out Lauren Stanley and Camila Anguiano  of Schreiner University 8-0 in the quarterfinals. Southwick and Lutz advanced to the final with an 8-1 decision over fifth seeded Alexis Arrieta and Tori Musngi of UT-Tyler. Trinity's duo will play the second-seeded team of Joseph and Melanie Marlin of UT-Dallas for the title.

Two Trinity players, junior Blaire Porter and first-year Anne Wellford, are matched for the "B Singles" Championship. Porter beat Marlee Daniel of Schreiner 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. Wellford claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anamariia Kheveli of Austin College.

The "A Singles and Doubles" champions advance to the ITA Oracle Cup, to be held October 13-16 at Surprise, Arizona.
