Trinity Women's Tennis Coach Rush is Runner-Up at World Seniors Championship

Fourth-year Trinity women's tennis Head Coach Gretchen Rush '86 was the doubles runner-up November 10 at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Seniors World Individual Championships. Coach Rush teamed up with longtime doubles partner Rosalyn Nideffer in the age 50-and-over women's doubles competition. The top-seeded duo lost in straight sets in the finals to #8 Mariana Matilde Metola and Monica Liliana Patron of Argentina. Coach Rush and Nideffer had defeated the fourth-seeded Brazilian team of Christiane Tassi and Simone Vasconcellas-Calves in the semifinals, by winning a second-set tiebreaker. Earlier, Coach Rush advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the ITF event.

The former Tiger All-American, NCAA 1983 Division I Doubles Champion, and 2001 Trinity Athletic Hall of Fame member is a veteran of the ITF Seniors events.  In 2015, Coach Rush and Nideffer won the deciding doubles match at the Maria Esther Bueno Cup in La Baule, France. The American team defeated France 2-1. Later, Coach Rush advanced to the singles semifinals of the ITF Seniors World Individual Championships.

Including the La Baule tournament, Coach Rush has played on five USA teams which have won the world Seniors title. The other venues were in Durban, South Africa; Perth, Australia; Majorca, Spain; and Mexico City, Mexico. Coach Rush also advanced to the women's doubles and mixed doubles finals at the 2012 ITF event in San Diego, California.

Coach Rush has made her mark on United States Tennis Association Seniors circuit, as well. She captured the 2014 USTA Grass Court Singles Championship at Forest Hills, New York.

As a Trinity student-athlete, Coach Rush reached the singles quarterfinals of the 1982 U.S. Open and the 1983 French Open. She also won gold medals in singles and doubles with Louise Allen '84 at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela. After graduation from Trinity, Coach Rush was a top-20 singles and doubles player on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour from 1986-1992. Coach Rush advanced to the Wimbledon singles quarterfinals in 1986 and 1989 and was a mixed doubles finalist in 1988. She captured four singles and four doubles titles as a pro player.

Since returning to her alma mater as head women's coach in 2014, the Tigers have advanced to the NCAA Division III Playoffs each year and won three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Two players have earned All-America honors during her tenure. Coach Rush previously coached at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges.
