San Antonio - The 23rd-ranked Trinity women's tennis team lost a close 3-4 decision to NCAA Division I member University of the Incarnate Word (TX), and had its home match with Division II St. Edward's (TX) University halted because of rain.

MATCH SUMMARIES

In the opening dual match of the day, played at the University of the Incarnate Word, the Tigers  won two of three doubles to take a 1-0 lead (playing under D-I rules. Caroline Kutach and Zoe Kaffen were victorious at #2 doubles, while Liza Southwick and Cheyenne Duncan captured the third line. Marie Lutz and Mary Kaffen came up short in #1 doubles.

The see-saw match continued, as Anne Welford lost at #6 singles to tie things up, but Kutach gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead by winning #2 singles.  The Cardinals evened the match again as Lutz lost in the third position, and then UIW took the lead after Southwick was defeated at the top line. Incarnate Word clinched the dual match after Andrea De Leon was edged in a three-setter at #5. Zoe Kaffen prevailed 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 to finish out the match.

Later in the day, the Tigers took on St. Edward's University, ranked 37th in Division II, at the Butch Newman Tennis Center. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate, and the match was halted because of rain.

Trinity (1-1) captured all three doubles matches before the dual match was stopped during singles. Lutz and Zoe Kaffen won #1 doubles, Southwick and Mary Kaffen took the second match, and Kutach and De Leon were victorious on the third line.

Southwick won the first set of #1 singles, and held a 1-0 advantage when the rains came. Lutz led 3-2 in the first set of #2 singles, and Zoe Kaffen was up 4-3 at #4, Mary Kaffen was leading 4-1 at the time of the stoppage.
