#17 Women's Tennis Takes Down #13 Johns Hopkins

Fredericksburg, Virginia - The 17th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team defeated #13 Johns Hopkins (MD) University 8-1 at the University of Mary Washington on Friday.

 

MATCH SUMMARY

The teams split the first two doubles points of the contest, then the Tigers secured a 2-1 advantage with a top-line victory from Marie Lutz and Zoe Kaffen.

Clearly, that momentum carried into singles, as Trinity swept all six contests to finish off a convincing win.

Mary Kaffen won a straight-set victory at line five to clinch the win, and the Tigers finished off the singles sweep with two three-set wins.

Lutz scored a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 win at line three, then Liza Southwick battled out a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 win at #1 singles.

 

NOTABLES

Trinity stands at 9-6 overall, and improved to 9-3 against NCAA Division III teams. Johns Hopkins dropped to 1-3 after the loss.

The doubles team of Caroline Kutach and Andrea De Leon is sporting a flawless 8-0 record following today's win at the third line. De Leon also is 12-2 in singles after winning the sixth line today.

Southwick has a 9-5 singles record, and Zoe Kaffen - a winner at #4 singles - is 9-4.

The Tigers take on 22nd-ranked Skidmore (NY) College at 3:00 EDT Saturday, at Mary Washington.
