Box Score 2 San Antonio - The 20th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team begins competition Friday in the NCAA Division III Championship at Claremont, California.
Trinity meets seventh-ranked Pomona-Pitzer (CA) Colleges at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time in the second round at Claremont McKenna (CA) College. The third-ranked host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges has a first-round-bye and will take on the winner of #27 Whitman (WA) College and 37th-ranked University of Texas-Tyler.
Saturday's third-round matchup at 10:00 a.m. will propel the winner to the NCAA quarterfinals May 21 at Claremont. The semifinals and finals are on the docket for May 22-23. On Wednesday, the NCAA will announce the singles and doubles participants with the championships scheduled for May 24-26 at Claremont.
Led by fourth-year Head Coach Gretchen Rush, the Tigers are competing in their seventh NCAA Championship in a row and the 22nd overall. Trinity punched its ticket to the tournament by winning a seventh consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, which was the 22nd in Tigers women's tennis history.
Last season, Trinity lost a hard-fought 5-2 NCAA second-round decision to Pomona-Pitzer at Claremont. The Tigers won the NCAA Championship in 2000 and have been runners-up on two occasions. Trinity also has advanced to the semifinals 10 times.
