Trinity Tops Triple Digits in Road Win at McMurry

Box Score

ABILENE, Texas - Trinity's women's basketball team notched a lopsided 102-50 road victory over McMurry University on Saturday evening, topping the century mark for the fourth time since the 2019-20 season. The Tigers have reached 100 or more points eight times in 10 seasons under the direction of Head Coach Cameron Hill.

Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) led all scorers with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting in the game, despite playing just 23 minutes of the game. She also added six rebounds, two assists, and three steals to her stat line.

It was a good day for Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) as she nearly messed around and had a triple-double. Robbins scored 11 points to go with seven assists and seven steals, hitting 4-of-5 from the floor.

The Rundown

Trinity held McMurry to just five field goals in the first quarter of action and Shipley scored nine of her 19 points in the opening period. The War Hawks were down just three points (8-5) when the Tigers broke the game open with a 12-0 run that left the home team trailing by 15 with less than two minutes left in the quarter. McMurry got the final basket of the period to make it a 24-11 Trinity advantage after one.

The second quarter was even more lopsided as the Tigers outscored McMurry 27-6 in the period. The quarter started with eight straight Trinity points to push the lead beyond 20 points. McMurry put together a short 6-2 run, but the Tigers then held the home team scoreless over the final 6:51 of the half. During that time, Trinity scored 17 unanswered points and McMurry was 0-for-10 from the field with seven turnovers. Trinity led 51-17 at the break.

Trinity didn't slow down one bit after halftime, putting up its best scoring quarter with 32 points, and holding McMurry to just 10 points to take an 83-27 margin into the final period. The quarter began with a 16-2 Trinity run that made it a 48-point lead with just under six minutes left in the third. Following a McMurry three-pointer, the Tigers scored 16 of the next 19 points and the lead neared 60 points as the third quarter came to an end.

McMurry closed the game with its best quarter of the night, but the Tigers had put the game out of reach long before the fourth period arrived. The War Hawks nearly doubled their point total from the first three periods, but still only gained four points as Trinity still scored 19 points in the final 10 minutes.

Numbers to Note

In addition to Shipley and Robbins, Hailey Coleman (Kansas City, Mo. / St. Teresa's Academy) also reached double digits with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. She recorded four blocks to go with four rebounds and three assists and a pair of steals.

Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) tied for the team lead with seven boards, adding 10 points and three steals. Kelly Simmons (Washington, D.C. / Antonian College Prep) also had seven rebounds, six points, and four steals in just 20 minutes off the bench.

Carly Leong (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) rounded out Trinity's double-digit scorers with 13 points in 18 minutes off the bench, connecting on 6-of-6 from the field. Emily Nelson (Sugar Land, Texas / Saint Agnes) and Mollee Priddy (Port Neches, Texas / Port Neches-Groves) both hit a pair of three-pointers on their way to eight points each.

Trinity hit better than 52% from the field and held McMurry under 35% shooting in the game. The Tigers also scored 40 points off of 31 McMurry turnovers and held distinct advantages in both points in the paint (56-20) and fast break points (22-5).

Coach Speak

"We are road warriors, tough and tenacious," exclaimed Coach Hill after the win. "We have been tested these first four games and I can say with complete confidence that this is the best 2-2 team in the country. It will be fun to see where we go from here."
