Trinity Women Finish SCAC Weekend With Lopsided Win

Box Score

SHREVEPORT, La. – Trinity's women's basketball team wrapped up a road weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action with a lopsided 83-50 win over Centenary College (La.) on Sunday afternoon.

Kelly Simmons (Washington, D.C. / Antonian College Prep) had a double-double at halftime, finishing with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the way for the Tigers. Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) nabbed a career-high 10 steals, becoming just the second Trinity player to record double-digit steals in a game.

Trinity improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 to start SCAC play with the win, while Centenary dropped to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action. The Tigers will resume their conference schedule after the new year, but will make their home debut after Christmas.

The Rundown

The game began with the Tigers scoring the first four points, but Centenary scored five quick points to take the lead. After a scoring drought of nearly three minutes by both teams, Simmons made sure Trinity finished strong over the final 3:28 of the quarter. She scored six points and grabbed five rebounds over that stretch and Trinity took a 12-9 lead heading into the second period.

Trinity carried that late momentum into the second quarter as the Tigers began the period with 10 unanswered points, leading to a 22-9 advantage after less than three minutes. The lead was still 13 at the midway point when Centenary rallied with an 8-2 run that made it a seven-point game with 1:22 left in the half. The Tigers were able to bump the lead back to double figures with 26 seconds left, but the Ladies hit a pair of foul shots in the waning moments to make it a 29-21 Trinity lead at the break.

The Tigers began the third quarter on fire, scoring 23 straight points to take the lead beyond 30 points with just over six minutes left in the period. Shipley scored 10 of the 23 points during the run to lead the way for Trinity. Centenary rattled off eight unanswered points of its own to answer, but the damage was already done as the Tigers led 64-31 after a 35-point third quarter.

The teams scored 19 points each to close out the game, which was the best stretch of the game for Centenary. The Tiger lead ballooned as high as 42 points in the fourth quarter as the visitors opened the final period with an 11-2 run.

Numbers to Note

Trinity forced an astounding 42 turnovers and held a 44-5 advantage on points off of those mistakes. The Tigers also had 25 offensive rebounds to lead 25-6 on second-chance points.

Robbins joins former Tiger Jenna Smith as the only players to record 10 or more steals in a game. Smith, the all-time leader in career steals at Trinity, accomplished the feat four different times – the last of which was in December of 2004. Robbins also dished out a team-high four assists.

Simmons set a career-high in rebounds for the second straight game, notching her second double-double of the season in the process.

Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) led Trinity with 15 points in the game, while Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) tied her career-high with seven points, but also set new career-best marks with four rebounds and four steals.

Hailey Coleman (Kansas City, Mo. / St. Teresa's Academy) had seven rebounds, six points, and three steals.

Coach Speak

"Great trip for the Tigers," said Head Coach Cameron Hill. "We are clicking our heels like Dorothy, using the phone like E.T., and playing our encore like Motley Crue! We are headed home sweet home! Finally. Calgaard here we come."
