Box Score 2 TEMPE, Ariz. - Trinity University Women's Tennis was ranked 19th nationally in division III and second in the west region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association following the completion of their spring season.
The Tigers posted an overall record of 9-8 (4-1 SCAC). Trinity went 9-2 against the division III opponents they faced over the course of the season. While the Tigers dropped a heartbreaking match to Southwestern University (TX) in the Southern Collegiate Athletics Championship, three players went on to compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
Senior Zoe Kaffen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif. / Jserra Prep) was selected to go to the NCAA singles championship and the pairing of junior Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) and first-year Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) competed in the NCAA doubles championships.
Z. Kaffen finished the season with a national ranking of 17 and a regional ranking of 2 in the west. The Senior played in the no. 1 slot all season and earned ITA All-American honors after defeating her opponent 6-1 and 6-3 in straight sets before falling in the second round of the Singles Championship.
The pairing of Cushing and Flores finished the season ranked no. 17 nationally and no. 2 in the west region. The duo fell in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships in straight sets but put together an overall record of 11-6 (4-0 SCAC). Cushing was also ranked no. 10 in the west region in singles. The first-year finished with an overall record of 8-6 (2-1 SCAC); Cushing posted a record of 6-2 against division III opponents.
Seniors Zoe and Mary Kaffen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif. / Jserra Prep) finished as the no. 7 pairing in the west region. The sister duo posted a 12-5 (5-0 SCAC) record. The pair did most of their damage from the no. 2 line.
Head coach Drew Cohn led the Tigers to a 9-2 record in division III play and finished as the SCAC runner-up. The Tigers have a bright future ahead after finishing as the no. 19 division III NCAA team with a no. 2 rank in the west region.
