Box Score 2 TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 19 Trinity University Women's Tennis was named an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Wednesday morning which coincided with the selection of eight Tiger women as Scholar-Athletes.
Senior Zoe Kaffen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif. / Jserra Catholic) collected the ITA Most Improved Senior honor for the West Region on top of being one of Trinity's eight scholar-athletes. The 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year earned all-america status this season as she advanced from her berth into the 2021 NCAA III individual singles tournament in May.
Junior Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) was named the West Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award honoree, also one of the Tigers' eight scholar-athletes. The ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes in all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) at the regional and national level. This prestigious award, which dates back to 1982, is presented to the men's and women's national student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Trinity's remaining six Scholar-Athletes are listed below:
Seniors Mary Kaffen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif. / Jserra Catholic), Paulina Garcia (San Antonio, Texas / Episcopal School of Texas), Annie Wise (Tulsa, Okla. / Holland), sophomore Maddee Williams Koeller (Helotes, Texas / home school) and first-years Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage) and Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen).
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year,
be listed on the institutional eligibility form
Trinity Women's Tennis finished Head Coach Drew Cohn's inaugural campaign ranked 19th in the country with a 9-2 record against NCAA III opponents, 9-8 overall, culminating in a SCAC championship appearance and two berths into 2021 NCAA III Championship individual tournaments: Zoe Kaffen for singles, Flores and Cushing for doubles.
