Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 21st-ranked women's soccer team remained undefeated with a 4-1 home win over East Texas Baptist University on Sunday afternoon.
Kaity Ward (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Preparatory) had a hand in each of Trinity's three first-half scores, picking up a goal and two assists in the half. Ward scored in both Tiger victories this weekend, after being held scoreless in the first two games of the year.
Trinity edged #20 California Lutheran University to start the weekend on Friday, and today's win moves the Tigers to 4-0-0 on the year. The team is riding a 14-game win streak dating back to the Spring 2021 season.
The Rundown
The Tigers dominated the action throughout, out-shooting the visitors 12-5 in the first half and 22-9 overall in the game.
Trinity scored three quick goals to take control of the scoreboard early, beginning with the second goal in the career of sophomore Emily Hayes (Allen, Texas / Allen). Alex Walsh (Tulsa, Okla. / Booker T. Washington) dribbled into the edge of the box to start the scoring play, finding Ward in front of the goal just inside the box. Ward pivoted and passed across to Hayes, who buried the ball into the net just 3:47 into the contest.
Walsh found Ward again just shy of 10 minutes later, and this time Ward powered her way into the box and sent a cross to Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood) at the top of the six-yard box. Sheridan faked one way and turned the other to get the open shot and a 2-0 Trinity lead.
Sheridan returned the favor in the 23rd minute, providing an assist to a goal by Ward that capped the first-half scoring. Ward took the pass from Sheridan just outside the box and took advantage of an opening to lift the shot past the keeper.
Meredith McAlester (Norman, Okla. / North) scored her first collegiate goal in the 60th minute to make it a 4-0 Trinity advantage. The ETBU defense attempted to clear the ball and stop Trinity's attack, but McAlester stepped in front of the pass, settled it at her feet, and fired in a long-range shot from well outside the box for the score.
The visitors were able to avoid the shutout with a goal in the 73rd minute, but first-year goalkeeper Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview) was still able to pick up the win in her first collegiate start, playing all 90 minutes.
Numbers to Note
Sheridan picked up her 19th career goal in today's game, which also resulted in her ninth career game-winner. She is now one of three Tiger players with three goals this season.
Ward is one of the others to have two goals scored this year, following her 27th career score on Sunday. She also upped her total to 23 career assists, needing just six more to move into the top 10 in school history.
Walsh's helper was the 16th of her career and her second of the season to tie for second on the team after four games played.
Coach Speak
"We had loads of contributions from all teammates today and kept our stamp on the game throughout," said Assistant Coach Spencer Valdespino. "Our pack of tigers refuse to get distracted by other tigers who act like they want the same thing. We'll continue the trend and use this week to continue to find ways to get fed quicker and more efficiently."
