SAN ANTONIO - No. 19 Trinity University Women's Tennis chalked up a pair of victories to begin the 2022 regular season at the Newman Tennis Center Saturday as it posted a shutout in the morning session over East Texas Baptist University, 9-0, followed by an 8-1 output over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the afternoon.
The Tigers (2-0) were fuelled by top-notch play from first-year Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) who posted straight-set victories in both matches including a shutout from line-two action against East Texas Baptist.
Hill partnered with fellow Trinity rookie Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) to produce back-to-back blanks from the second doubles line and secure the top two lines of doubles against the Crusaders in the afternoon on scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively.
Last season's NCAA III Championship entries, senior Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) and sophomore Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage) eased into action Saturday as the duo swept line-one doubles action, 8-1 against the Tigers of Marshall, Texas and 8-4 against UMHB. In individual action, each Tiger took the lineup for one match as Flores defeated her Crusader counterpart 6-0, 6-1 from the third line and Cushing took out ETBU's top-line entry 6-3, 6-3.
Another trio of Trinity first-years joined Hill and Kim in career-opening highlights. Jenna Lee (San Clemente, Calif. / Jserra Catholic) checked in with a 6-3, 6-0 victory in line three against East Texas Baptist for her first collegiate victory, followed closely by Sam Miller (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) and Trinity Hatchett (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) from the lineup's fifth and sixth slots. Miller later collected her second victory from the sixth line of singles action against the Crusaders.
