SAN ANTONIO - No. 19 Trinity University Women's Tennis dropped its first regular-season match of the 2022 campaign Saturday with a 5-2 tally at NCAA I University of the Incarnate Word.
The Tigers initially ceded line three in doubles action, which only set the stage for a rally in Trinity's first and second lines as each logged a 6-4 victory. The line-one duo of senior Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) and sophomore Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage) sealed the NCAA I-style doubles point just after reigning SCAC Doubles Team of the Week, first-years Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) secured the first 6-4 tally.
With the match still in play down 3-1, Kim returned to the book with Trinity's second point, a 6-4, 7-5 output in line two of singles action. By that time, both Cushing and sophomore Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen) were locked into third-set action. Cushing earned her first set 7-6 (7-5) but fell in back-to-back 6-3 tallies while Richard's defeat came on a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 tally that clinched the match for the Cardinals.
Trinity Women's Tennis returns to the Newman Tennis Center Sunday to host No. 37 Hardin-Simmons University for more in-region play. Match play alongside the Trinity and Hardin-Simmons men will begin at 11 a.m.
