SAN ANTONIO - No. 24 Trinity University Women's Tennis collected the fifth shutout victory of the 2022 campaign over an in-region opponent Saturday with its 9-0 tally over McMurry University at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.
The Tigers (6-5, 1-0 SCAC) notched four set-shutouts in individual play on the afternoon, led by back-to-back 6-0 marks from senior Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) in the second line. Flores and sophomore Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage) combined to dominate the top of the lineup with an 8-3 mark in line-one doubles, which clinched the doubles sweep, then Cushing put together a 6-0, 6-1 performance from the top spot of singles.
Sophomore Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen), with classmate Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia), set the tone as the first match point to be recorded on an 8-1 tally, then Richard clinched the match with one of three Tigers' 6-1, 6-1 results in singles play from line three. Cummings collected the final 6-1, 6-1 output to complete the match shutout.
Sophomore Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and first-year Sam Miller (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) slid up into the second line of doubles on Saturday and logged a second 8-1 performance in the early session, the took control to round out the singles section with wins in the fourth and sixth lines, respectively.
No. 24 Trinity Women's Tennis has another pair of in-region matchups next Saturday (March 19) with its second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match of the season, Schreiner University, in the morning before a visit from Whitman College (WA) in the afternoon.
The Tigers then face five matches over six days the following week, all against squads ranked nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with No. 1 University of Chicago to lead off the week on Monday, March 21.
