Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity softball squad dropped two conference games to Southwestern University to open up the weekend series. The Tigers struggled to get the bats going both games and were shutout twice as a result.
First-year Sydney Watson (San Antonio, Texas / San Antonio Christian), senior Sammie Whitman (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis), first-year Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real), and sophomore Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Clayton Valley Charter) all collected a hit in both games.
Game One Rundown
The Tigers and Pirates were both scoreless until the top of the third inning. Southwestern exploded for five runs in large part to the grand slam SU hit. The Tigers were able to put runners on first and second with one out after sophomore Diamond Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens) walked and Watson reached on a single but they were both stranded to end the bottom of the third.
The Pirates added four more runs to take a commanding 9-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tigers tried to put a rally together by stringing two singles together but Southwestern was able to escape the jam with two outs to keep the shutout intact.
Game Two Rundown
Senior pitcher Cat Patterson (West Columbia, Texas / Brazosport Christian School) sat down the first eight hitters she saw before giving up a two-out single in the third.
In the bottom of the first, Watson singled and moved over to third base but Miller was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double to end the inning.
Patterson managed to keep Southwestern scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. SU plated three runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead late in game two of the series. The Pirates added one more run in the top of the seventh to make the score 4-0. With the Tigers struggling to put the ball in play, that four-run deficit was too much to overcome.
