Tigers Shutout Schreiner University to Earn Saturday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN ANTONIO - The softball team took game one of the three-game series over Schreiner University. The Tigers shut out the Mountaineers to win 2-0 but fell 6-1 to improve to (10-16, 5-3 SCAC).

Senior hurler Cat Patterson (West Columbia, Texas / Brazosport Christian School) dazzled during game one, with an impressive complete game, one-hit shutout. The senior also recorded two strikeouts and retired 11 straight batters before walking a batter in the sixth inning. Senior right fielder Kristina Kish (Tucson, Ariz. / Canyon Del Oro) and senior second baseman Sammie Whitman (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) scored the two Tigers two runs in the fourth inning.

Game One Rundown

Both teams recorded their first hit in the second inning. Patterson gave up her only hit of the day with one out but worked her way out of the jam with a double play. Trinity threatened in the top of the second with runners on first and second but couldn't bring a run across. Patterson then went on to sit down 11 straight hitters until surrendering a walk in the top of the sixth inning.

In the fourth inning, sophomore third baseman Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) led off with a double to left-center. Sophomores Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Clayton Valley Charter) and Diamond Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens) reached to load the bases with no outs. Delaluna was brought in by Kish who reached on a fielder's choice. Whitman followed that up with a single to bring in Williams.

The two-run lead was all Patterson needed as she was cruising on the mound. In the seventh inning, Patterson retired the three batters she faced to close out the game.

Game Two Rundown

The Tigers were held hitless until Williams singled in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams were fairly quiet until Schreiner scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Trinity tried to respond in the bottom of the fifth but all three hitters were retired in order. The Mountaineers added three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 6-1 lead over the Tigers.

Delaluna started off the sixth with a single. Sophomore Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) drew a walk to put runners on first and second. With two outs left, first-year Maliena Carelli (Kirkland, Wash. / Lake Washington) hit a pinch-hit single to bring in a run and make the score 6-1.
